May – Inner Peace, Unimpeded Practice
This relief portrays a magnificent preaching scene presided over by Śākyamuni Buddha, the protagonist seated in ‘lotus posture’ on a lotus pedestal. His hands are displaying the ‘Dharma wheel-turning gesture’ in front of his chest. The vividness and diversity of the figures around the Buddha are particularly impressive. This sculpture is a sublime masterpiece of early Buddhist art.
Everything in the world vanishes through time and space, while only the Dharma still remains. May all of us remember and follow the Buddha’s teachings through this Buddhist sculpture and to be inspired by his compassionate philosophy.
